## What an open spiral belt is

An open spiral belt is a woven metal conveyor belt made of wire spirals linked by crossrods. On Tribelt's English-language site the same product is called a **balanced weave belt**; both names describe a belt with alternating left-hand and right-hand spirals. Tribelt manufactures open spiral belts completely in-house at its plant in Haaksbergen, the Netherlands.

Because the mesh is open, air, heat, steam and liquids pass straight through the belt. That makes open spiral belts the usual choice where products must be ventilated, drained or heated evenly: industrial ovens, cooling and frying lines, drying tunnels and sterilisers.

## Versions

- **Standard wide spiral belt (WG)** for general conveying and baking
- **Flattened spiral belt** with a smoother, more stable surface for small products
- **U-hook edge** and other edge finishes (welded or flattened)
- **ClearTrac**, a positively driven belt that engages sprockets, so it cannot slip and keeps running straight on long or wide conveyors

## Specifications

- **Crossrod pitch:** about 3.8 to 35 mm
- **Mesh opening:** about 2.7 to 20 mm
- **Spiral wire:** 0.8 to 3.5 mm diameter (flattened wire also available)
- **Crossrod wire:** 0.8 to 5 mm diameter
- **Wire strength:** 600 to 1,050 N/mm², in stainless steel and special alloys
- **Temperature:** ambient up to roughly 1,150 °C, depending on version
- **Width:** 15 to 6,500 mm

## Applications

- **Food:** bread and pastry oven belts, cooling, baking and frying lines for potato and vegetable products
- **Pharmaceuticals:** sterilisation tunnels and drying equipment
- **Industry:** drying insulation materials, annealing glass, hardening, sintering and brazing metal parts
- **Special conveying:** transfers with tight bends or very short product hand-overs, and conveying at high heat

## Benefits

- Made in Tribelt's own factory, so quality is consistent and lead times short
- Every spiral and crossrod can pivot on its own, keeping the belt flexible
- Weaves range from very open to tightly packed
- Withstands up to about 1,150 °C with the right material
- Tracks straight thanks to alternating spirals or sprocket guidance
- Standard and flattened versions are an economical option
- Little maintenance thanks to a sturdy build and wear-resistant wire

## Options

Product carriers, side chains for extra guidance, raised side plates, flights, a choice of wire grades and diameters, and edges that are welded, flattened or finished with U-hooks.

## Drives

Open spiral belts are driven in one of two ways:

- **Friction drive** for standard, flattened and U-hook belts. It needs a drive roller of adequate diameter and good support, for example a herringbone layout with PE1000 wear strips.
- **Positive sprocket drive** for ClearTrac. The teeth prevent slip and keep the belt straight even when the conveyor is long relative to its width. Tribelt machines these sprockets itself in POM or stainless steel, with bore, keyway and locking to order.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is an open spiral belt?

An open spiral belt, known in English trade literature as a balanced weave belt, is a metal conveyor belt woven from alternating left- and right-hand wire spirals joined by crossrods. Its open mesh lets air, heat and liquid pass through, which suits ovens, coolers, dryers and sterilisers.

### Which versions does Tribelt make?

The standard wide spiral belt (WG), a flattened spiral belt, a version with U-hook edges and the ClearTrac belt, which is driven positively by sprockets.

### Can an open spiral belt handle very high temperatures?

Yes. Depending on the alloy, Tribelt open spiral belts work up to about 1,150 °C, so they are used for sintering, brazing, hardening, glass annealing and industrial baking.

### What are the main benefits of a made-to-measure open spiral belt?

A straight belt run, a free choice between open and dense weaves, heat resistance up to about 1,150 °C, little risk of snagging thanks to the alternating spirals, and optional flights, side plates or chain edges.

### What should I include in a quote request?

State the belt width, preferred material (for example AISI 304), the application and any options. Tribelt helps turn that into the right construction; lead time depends on the type, and express orders or prototypes are possible.
